What would you do if you were Prime Minister for the day?
Scrap tuition fees. Higher education should be available dependent on your academic competence, not the size of your wallet. While I can get one degree for free by being on low income, I can’t afford a postgraduate degree or a second undergraduate degree, even though I’m perfectly capable of doing one.
If you could debate against anyone (living or dead) on any topic, who and what would you choose?
I would like to meet the Maharal of Prague and ask him if he really did make a Golem. If he didn’t, I would want to know whether he would have done if he could. If he did, I would want to know why he made the decision, what the Golem thought about its existence - if it was capable of opinions - and what he thought of AI and modern attempts to construct artificial humans. I would also ask him what this says about the nature of the relationship between humans and machines.
Do you have a ‘party trick’? What is it?
Not really a trick, but I’m fairly good at saying things to make people laugh.
What would you do if you won the lottery?
Hire some people and start a business. I don’t think sums of money that big should really belong to individuals.
What was the last thing you had a heated debate about and who was it with?
I saw a grammatical mistake in World of Warcraft, and one of my guildmates said that spelling and grammar weren’t important in a video game like World of Warcraft because people will still buy it. I was furious because a video game is a work of art, not a moneymaking tool. Besides, it was a misuse of apostrophes and they feel like nails grating down a blackboard to me. Someone is going to choose not to buy it based upon that - it looks cheap and unprofessional, and people don’t buy shoddy workmanship.
Do you have a favourite charity or cause?
I’m quite fond of both the Open Source movement, but it would be so hugely successful and revolutionise society so much if it was widely implemented - in factors such as medical research, art and literature etc. as well as software - that I don’t really consider it a ‘charity’ or ‘cause’.
Could you survive without the internet?
Without the Internet possibly, but not without a computer. I need to play video games to live.
Do you have a secret reality TV addiction? IF SO, CONFESS NOW!
I loathe ‘reality TV’ almost as much as I do ‘reality’.
What are your favourite websites?
My own, of course! (http://tehexile.lowtech.org). Apart from that: I’m a Livejournal addict. I also use Youtube a lot because its the only place I can find some of the more obscure video game soundtracks. I use Gamefaqs all the time for game help and reviews.
What are the tope 5 tunes on your i-tunes playlist?
I don’t use iTunes. When iTunes makes a playlist, it physically copies the audio file into the playlist folder, thus using up twice as much of your hard disk space. I don’t have much hard disk space as it is. My most listened to song is probably Dancing Mad from Final Fantasy 6.
